Friendship Club

Friendship Club: Building a Network of Lasting Friendships

Friendship Club is a bi-weekly program designed to empower, educate, build skills, enhance self-esteem and provide social, educational and recreational opportunities to individuals who had aged-out of publically-funded programs typically offered through the public school system. These underserved individuals often lack opportunities to develop friendships and make choices about how to spend their leisure time. Friendship Club was launched in 1999 with 10 individuals and teaches life and social skills to members while providing the rare opportunity to form friendships with peers. Since then, Friendship Club has grown to serve over over 125 people age 12 and over who meet in groups of 12 – 30 every other week, including a group for young adults and group for school-aged members.

Friendship Club serves people with varying abilities by focusing on teamwork and assuring that all members participate fully in club activities and community events. It teaches independent living skills, such as counting money, making change, preparing meals, doing household chores, and gardening. By increasing access to services for underserved individuals, Friendship Club members become more independent and self-sufficient.
